BANGKOK – A Thai woman accused of forcing her 12-year-old daughter into sex work in Japan has been returned to Thailand after being arrested in Taiwan, Thai police say.

The case came to light after the girl sought help from Japanese police, saying her 29-year-old mother had taken her to work at a traditional massage shop in Tokyo before forcing her into providing sexual services.

The woman later left the child in Japan and travelled to Taiwan for work, where she was arrested by local authorities. The girl was placed under the care of officials in Japan before being returned to Thailand.

At about 17:00 local time on 23 December, officers from Thailand’s Anti-Human Trafficking Division took the woman into custody at Suvarnabhumi airport after she was handed over by Taiwanese authorities.

Police said she was immediately transferred to the Central Investigation Bureau in Bangkok for questioning and to be formally charged under Thai law, after a criminal court arrest warrant had been issued.
